COVID is Not Over: What You Need to Know

Don't shoot the messenger, but COVID is not over. COVID is surging in 25 states and territories. So, hold on before you head out the door without a mask this fall. Cases are expected to peak at just the wrong time—mid-to-early September. This is when many students and office workers will be back from vacation, commuting, taking classes, roaming crowded hallways and cafeterias, and attending parties. If there was ever a time to be COVID-cautious, it's fall 2023.

Conversation Starters for Your Peer Support Group

Here are a few conversation starters you can use in your peer support group to have a 'not so fast!' talk with friends who aren't clear on the facts. One thing they may not know is that 17 million people have Long COVID, and it often comes from repeated exposure. That's why masking and air filtration not only stop the latest strain of the virus from spreading but also limit the development of Long COVID. This chronic illness affects an outsized number of frontliners and teachers when COVID is surging.

The Importance of Masks

Does this latest surge mean I need to wear a mask at school or work?

In crowded spaces, yes, that is ideal. A good-fitting KN95 mask or N95 mask is recommended. I tend to like the ones made by 3M that you can get in a pack of 20. They have two straps, an adjustable chin, and don't fog up my glasses. I found them on Amazon. But choose what works for you. The best mask is the one you will wear without feeling uncomfortable. I found one that I can even make it through an entire yoga class, where breathing is essential!

Ventilation Matters

But shouldn't my school or workplace be filtering the air?

Yes, ventilation is key. Last winter, I noticed that Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health had filtration systems, but classrooms at Harvard Medical School did not. HSPH is part of the Healthy Buildings program, and its site offers information for administrators on choosing an air filter that's right for the room. You can also make your own air filtration system out of duct tape and a box fan for less than $100. The details are here. Back in the day, during post-school lockdowns, students were making them for their classrooms.

Engaging in Difficult Conversations

Note: If you are attempting to talk to someone who won't mask, the trick is to listen to their opinions. Then, calmly and confidently offer the facts: Long COVID can affect anyone; it often lasts for years. Having been through it, we wouldn't wish the physical pain, long-term effects, grief, and financial loss on anyone.

Building a Supportive Community

I hope these pointers help you and your community find protection and reduce anxiety. It's crucial to foster a sense of togetherness. When we share our experiences, we create a supportive environment. This evidence-based intervention is especially needed when physicians have limited time and patients with chronic illness feel isolated.
